When word first got out that the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray was being turned into a big budget musical for Broadway, most critics didn’t know what to think. The original film was, at best, a cult classic and one that most folks had never seen. It was notable for several reasons, however.

The original role of main character Tracy Turnblad was played by talk show host Ricki Lake, and it was one of the only John Waters films to not feature anything truly offensive. Through hard work and a bit of luck, Tracy finds herself on stage, on camera, and on the show. While that victory would be enough for most musicals, it is actually just the tip of the iceberg. Feeling that she has helped to open the show to chubby kids, she then takes the next obvious step and tries to take away the racist blocks against African American kids. What follows is a raucous, fun and feel good time that makes Hairspray a winner.

Hairspray stands today as one of the most universally beloved musicals of all time, spawning dozens of touring productions, more awards than you can count and critical praise that most shows long for.
