There is a recent growing trend for new businesses installing underfloor heating systems, as opposed to using radiator heaters, in a bid to become more environmentally friendly. It would seem that new commercial buildings are benefitting far more with the installation of this kind of heating system as opposed to the conventional wall mounted radiators.

History

Historically heating from underneath the floors have been a useful devise since the Roman period. The Romans had begun using the hypocaust, which comprised of ducts built underneath the floor and flues, which were built into the wall. The hot air would circulate through system warming up the floors and walls and evenly distributing the heat in buildings. This was used by many wealthy people and the manual labour for keeping the hypocaust running would require twenty four hour maintenance.

In Korea the Ondol was another type of underfloor heating that was designed from the kitchen heating. The kitchen was the warmest part of the house, therefore a heating system was designed to circulate the heated air from the kitchen and distributed into different rooms. The term Ondol means hot stone, because of the hot stove in the kitchen.
