The business of selling information products can be a lucrative endeavor for any aspiring entrepreneur. In fact, when you engage in the selling of information products you in effect have become an infopreneur. What is an information product, you ask?

They report a 23% increase in sales over 2004. The publishers that contributed to the survey reported $11,875,783 in total sales and 1,692,964 items sold.

You learn a couple of interesting things from this report. If you go on to read it, you notice that the only companies that contributed to this survey are the 'big boys' HarperCollins, Harlequin, Random House, Fictionwise, E-Reads, etc. I don't know about you, but I haven't bought more than one or two ebooks from any of these guys lately. When I buy ebooks, it's usually from one guy who has a skill he is willing to share with the rest of us.

That brings me to my second point. Those 'big boys' mostly sell fiction. Fiction is a lot harder to sell online. But that's okay when you are Simon and Schuster or one of the other publishers that make the majority of their sales through physical books you find in a bookstore. Ebooks are just a sideline for them.

So what does this mean in English? It means that even companies who sell ebooks as a side business in a hard to sell category are making serious money. This is good news for those of you who are interested in selling information products full time.

This survey left something else out. It left out all the 'little guys' that sell their own products. There are one-person internet businesses that sell thousands of dollars worth of informational products every month. People like them didn't make it in this survey.

What does this mean to you? It means that the ebook and information industry is actually bringing in a lot more money than you might think by reading the survey. You can make a great living if you sell what people want to buy. People are doing it every day. Which brings up the question.

Can a Regular Person Sell Information Products?

Absolutely. Thanks to the internet, you can quickly and easily start selling information products to an audience who is looking to buy. In the old days, if you wanted to sell an information product like 'How to Make a Six Figure Income' or something similar, you would have to go through a process that looks something like this:

1) Write the product 2) Find a publisher or publish it on a vanity press (which is expensive) 3) Advertise your product in magazines, newspapers, on the TV or radio, or through direct mail (also very expensive) 4) Wait to see if anyone orders. This kind of system rewards the people who have a lot of money to spend. Everyone else would go broke before the first sale.

When you sell an electronic information product, the process is quicker and less expensive for you. The process would go like this. 1) Write the product 2) Set up website to sell it (Very low cost) 3) Market it (Low cost) Your product is ready to sell a lot faster than if you tried publishing it as a physical book. And there are techniques you can use to keep your initial costs down to almost nothing.

This means two things: 1) You're making almost 100% profit, and since you do all of the marketing yourself 2) You don't have to share your money. But if you want to make good money selling information products you have to sell what people want to buy.

With these kinds of advantages, is it any wonder the ebook market is growing? Consumers love information products. The people who market them love them even more.

3 Reasons Why You Should Sell Information Products

We already discussed how strong the information products market is. But there are other reasons why getting into the information products business is a smart move for anyone who wants to make a great income. Here they are:

1) You can charge more. You would think that you would have to charge less for an ebook than you do for a physical book. A physical book is something you can hold it in your hand after all. But information marketers have found that you can actually charge more for an ebook than you could for a regular book on the same subject with the same amount of pages.

Let's say you go into the bookstore and want to buy a book on marketing ebooks. You would probably expect to pay somewhere between $12-$25 dollars. If the book costs much more than that it better have a couple of CDs or something. A particular guru is selling an ebook on the same subject for $79! Better yet, it's one of his top sellers.

2) You can take advantage of current interests. Publishing a book the old fashioned way is slow. Even if you work at top speed and publish the book yourself, you are going to need 6 months to get your idea into book form. By then the 'latest craze' is yesterday's old news. On the other hand you can get an ebook written in a matter of days and sell it while your subject is still red hot.

3) Ebooks are easy to produce. Gone are the days when you had to have a huge IQ or a college education to write a good book. Thanks to the internet, you can become an expert on just about anything. And that is what people are willing to pay for, expertise in a subject they don't know.

You don't even have to write the book yourself. Pick the subject matter, do a little research, and hire someone else to do it. The internet is full of people willing to do the work for you at a reasonable cost.

In conclusion, information products are a great way to make a lot of money. You can create an ebook or audio file for very little cost and sell it for far more than your average bookstore can get away with. I don't mean to be obnoxious, but you would have to be crazy not to get into a business with such low costs and high income potential
