Sharp memory is not a miracle!

We often wish to have sharp memories. Having a sharp memory is not a miracle. It requires only a little bit of workout and few concentration exercises. Few years back, a concept of photographic memory was greatly in vogue and people were greatly mesmerized with the thought. It was nothing but the capacity of a person to recollect an event or incident, which had been perceived though eyes. The hidden truth of a photographic memory is just concentration!

Memory is the storehouse of information in a human mind. This information can be words, visuals or thoughts. Research on memory began in the late nineteenth century. It was earlier a part of psychology, but with later developments shifted to the stream of neuroscience.

Neuroscience is scientific field devoted to the study of the human nervous system. It includes all attributes of the nervous system whether it is structure, development, function, genetics or its biochemistry. When neuroscience combined itself with psychology to study the pattern of memory it was named neuropsychology. This field of science closely studies the most important nervous system function, which is concerned with the perception and transmission of messages or information through the brain. It has greatly enhanced knowledge about the human world with its comprehensive study about the brain and its function. Not only that, it has also come up with various methodologies to improve memory capacity. These methods are based on the research that has been going on for long about the most complex yet very efficient part of human body, which could never be duplicated, by any of the scientists.

The Brain is the most complex structure in the world because it takes tonnes of data in a second. Recollect the time when you have been sitting complacently on a chair, turning e newspaper sheets. At that moment your eyes are fixed on the black letters of the newspaper, and your ears are hearing the sounds around, whereas your nose is tickled with the fragrance of lily, and your tongue still has the taste of those biscuits you are having. Not only that, while you are reading, your mind still has those emotional upsprings in its bag.

The complexity of the brain can be analyzed with this small example. Memory is the warehouse, where all this static and emotional data is stored. Believe it or not, people but it is true that our brain is bombarded with sixty thousand stimuli each second. The problem starts here itself; the brain memory has a huge capacity but that space is overstuffed with unnecessary thoughts. People often say that they forget things very fast or that they find it extremely difficult to remember things. The sole reason for this is that their memory is overloaded with redundant information.

Neuropsychological study states that human memory can be improved if it concentrates on useful thoughts. Since our senses are open and receptive to information from our surroundings, we must filter them. Meditation is the most effective way to filter the negative and wasteful thoughts that occupy the brain memory. They are simply the virus data, which obstruct the smooth functioning of the mind, making it weak. Memory capacity can be enhanced if a person regularly cleanses his/her mind.

Students often face problems with learning and grasping information. This is mainly because of lack of concentration. While studying, they must concentrate consciously on their text rather than thinking about the cricket match to be held the next day. There are various memory development exercises recommended by neurologists to improve the memory capacity of students. After concentration the next step is retention. Concentration is related to perception, and grasping to retention. After a student has understood the data or the text, he must also have the ability to retain it in the mind and recall it when the need be. One can increase memory retention capacity by regularly revising the data stored in the memory. This revising and re-revising will increase the duration of the information. One can improve one's memory through these exercises.

Recalling is directly related to memory retention capacity. Neuropsychological study states that recalling is a problem because of neuro strain. Students often complain of forgetting answers while they are writing an examination. This is mainly because of stress and anxiety. While a person is stressed it requires more oxygen to relax. During examination students should carry out a small breathing exercise to calm down their nerves. This will allow more oxygen to the brain, and it will not block information halfway. If these tips are followed in one's life, the dream of a photographic or a sharp memory is not impossible.
