Useful Information for Breastfeeding Mothers

Breastfeeding is helpful to both the baby as well as the mother in several ways. But it needs proper care and information before feeding the baby. Below are some useful information that every breastfeeding women should know:

1. Breastfeeding should not interfere with sexual relationship as long as you as well as your partner’s attitude are positive. It is also known that mothers who feed their babies return to their normal physical fitness and body anatomy faster than who feed their babies on artificial milk. This is because of the hormones produced by the nursing mother. It is also known that mothers who breastfeed babies are likely to have a harmonious sexual relationship. During lactation there is nothing wrong in having intercourse with your partner.

2. There is nothing wrong, if your partner fondles your breasts and even suckles them, if this is acceptable to both of you. If the breasts are painful or if the problem of leakage is there, it is better to have sex after breastfeeding the baby. If it is difficult to have sex in certain positions because of the pain in the breasts, then look for a more comfortable position.

3. Breastfeeding mothers who want complete protection against pregnancy are advised to use contraceptive methods. Oral contraceptive pills are not advised as a method of contraception during breastfeeding. Oral pills may contain certain hormones which reduce the supply of breast milk. These pills also affect the quality of breast milk, since the hormones from the pills are passed on to the baby. The hormones in the pills may have several bad effects on the baby, such as causing Jaundice, enlargement of baby’s breasts and change in the baby’s genitalia and bones.

4. Generally during the first few months of breastfeeding, pregnancy doesn’t occur. If it does, you may continue breastfeeding without any problem. The quantity of breast milk secreted during pregnancy may decline but the quality may not be affected. However, if you continue breastfeeding, the quality of colostrums in the milk for the next baby will be affected. So it is advised, the breastfeeding should be reduced gradually and stopped.
