In order to be capable of raising children, who are set to take on life's challenges and perceive disappointment as simply a springboard rather than an obstacle, it is our duty as parents to inculcate in them the principles of self-support, self-determination, self-assurance, and self-respect.

Children, who are self-determined, are capable of cogitating for themselves, rather than relying on us for providing them the solutions for every trivial issue that takes place, whether optimistic or pessimistic. Our children should be capable of resolving issues by themselves at a very young age or else they will grow up to be adults who prefer remaining on the periphery and watch the passing of time, quite unobserved.

Developing the self-esteem of our children is possibly amongst the greatest gifts any parent can bestow on their kids, early on in their life. By educating our kids to be self-sufficient and to have confidence in their capability to accomplish things, we would not be extremely apprehensive when they grow up in due course, since we are positive that they will take sensible decisions.

This is an extremely hostile world, which we inhabit. Whether we wish to accept it or not, it is not possible for us to protect our children continuously from these adverse conditions. At some point of time, we need to release them and permit them to travel to new destinations and build a persona of their own.

Suppressing this development by keeping them under our scrutiny would be unfortunate for them. Bear in mind that we do not possess our children. They are not pawns to dance to our every tune. They are blessed with special aptitudes and traits that should be improved and refined.

1. Motivate them to follow their dreams.

A majority of parents put a damper on their kids' desire to dream big, out of apprehension that the ordeals they have to face on their way as well as the letdowns will cause distress and discontent. This is just not the case. Parents should support and egg on their kids to seek whatever they set their sights on, since disillusionment is an unavoidable part of human life. It is only through setbacks that we discover and grow. It is only by tasting defeat that we fathom the means of successfully tackling the subsequent
confrontation, which we come across.

2. Give your kids free rein

It is not very likely to be constantly providing answers to your kids' problems. You need to permit them to develop at their very own tempo and time. In case their decisions are diametrically different from your's, do not challenge them. Your duty is to take a backseat, and observe them from the periphery and make certain that they do not lose their way, but not to monitor their every action. If they commit errors, it's okay. Rather than setting right problems on their behalf, train them to jump right back into the fray and start all over again.

3. Have faith in your kids

In case you do not let your children know that you have faith in their capability to realize their dreams, then, in all likelihood, they will be unable to pull off anything in life. Keep in mind that our kids frequently count on us for direction and backing, even after gaining adulthood. Our recognition and motivation is indispensable. The simple truth is, if you do not have trust in them, they will not too.

4. Support them

Albeit our children commit faults, we should let them know at all times that we are right behind them and we care for them. Certainly, our children have never, and will never make the wisest choices. We will watch them break down when they are unsuccessful. With the purpose of assisting them in getting back the power to wage a fresh battle, we need to disclose to them that drawbacks are inevitable in one's life and we will be there to aid them in starting life anew. Nobody is picture perfect. Like our children, we too, have our flaws.

Being parents, there is only that much we can do for our kids to ready them for the journey to be undertaken. It is not right on our part to keep them with us always. Every child is an exceptional personality, with his/her own special agenda in life. Give them the freedom to develop and prosper.
