Of course, some programmers do still work completely freelance, programming their work from home for anyone who asks. Such programmers often specialize in a specific area or language such as Java that is often used, especially for web design projects. Such work tends to be limited in scope, and so does not require the large initial investment of time. Customers hiring a programmer for such work tend to have a specific job in mind, one that likely does not require more than a few weeks work. Such clients ensure that, at least for now, the myth of the lone programmer who does all his work from home still has some basis in fact.
