When I first started using pay per click advertising, it took some time before it finally began to make sense. In the meantime, I wasted hundreds of dollars getting an education in how to write an effective pay per click ad.

I'd like to share this knowledge with you now, in hopes that you won't have to go through the same painfully expensive learning process that I did.

The secret to writing a winning pay per click ad lies in this simple phrase: "Think inside the box."

Almost without fail, new Internet marketers and pay per click advertisers make the same basic mistake right out of the gate. They try to get creative. We're taught from early childhood to be ourselves and to be creative. However, when you first start out in pay per click advertising, it's best to stick with the tried and true.

First, do some research on your target market, find out what they search for. Develop your initial list of keywords by approaching your product or service from multiple perspectives,.

Next, pare down your initial keyword list by choosing only the ones that are most relevant to your product or service. Take this list and separate it into small, tightly focused groups of similar terms.

Now it's time for some research. Do a google search for each of your keywords, and make a note of the top 5 advertisers and the ads they are running. Delete from this list, any ads run by large, big name corporations. The reason behind this is that large companies with huge budges can afford to take risks. We want to study the behavior of small companies like ours.

For the next two weeks, you should track your keywords, the top 5 advertisers, and the ads that they place. The reason behind following the advertisers for two weeks is to eliminate the the poor performers. We only want to focus our attention on the keywords and the companies which remain in the top 5 day after day.

At the end of the two week period, go back over your list of keywords, ads and advertisers. Pay particular attention to the construction of each ad. You will begin to see similarities in the headlines and body copy of the top ads.

Start a pay per click campaign. With your first tightly focused group of keywords, write an ad that is similar to the top 5 ads that you've been tracking over the last two weeks.

Let's revisit that last paragraph again, because it is at the very heart of your winning pay per click strategy. Write your ad so that it closely resembles the tone and focus of the ads that have been in the top 5 spots for those keywords over the last two weeks that you've been tracking them. While it wouldn't be sporting to copy anyone else's ad directly, there is nothing wrong with copying a winning concept.

In this manner, you can write winning pay per click ads without having to go through an expensive learning process.
