As the Internet becomes increasingly popular, more and more entrepreneurs seek their fortune online. To get anywhere with Internet marketing, however, you need good search engine rankings; since most Web surfers won’t click through pages and pages of search engine results, everyone wants their website near the top. One of the main determinates of where a website falls on this list is the presence and quality of “keywords,” words contained in the site’s text that indicate to the search engine what the site is about.

When it comes to online marketing and setting up websites, there are basically two camps: those who believe the best opportunities are in “niche,” or specialty, markets, and those who advise sticking with the larger, mainstream markets.

The Value of Niche Websites

“Niche” websites are websites that focus on specialty markets. Although these websites focus on subjects that are not often searched for, they also have less competition; this means that although a limited number of Internet users search for these topics each month, there are also fewer sites that appear in the search listings. The end result is that a niche website is able to attract a considerably higher percentage of these searches than they would for more common searches.

However, it’s important to also remember that a niche website deals with a topic that has limited popularity. In other words, while you may attract all or almost all of the Internet traffic searching for your topic, there is limited room for improvement.

The most important part of designing a niche website is to target the keywords associated with the topic. In other words, good keyword research is necessary if you want to pull in as many searches as possible.
