Beneficial and Negative Effects of Divorce

If you have children while divorcing, they are affected greatly as well, and the impression will last a lifetime, carrying on into the next generation. Your parents are affected too, if you happen to be close enough to them. If you have common friends and acquaintances (and most of us usually do since married life is all about sharing), they would be forced to take sides, which is very painful for them and they may even disassociate themselves from the two of you.

There are two faces of every coin. Just like there are a lot of bad effects that divorce has on us, there are some good effects too. This may sound strange, as divorce itself is a negative incident, the failure of the concentrated efforts of two people. Let us see then what these effects are by going through the aspects of our lives that are usually affected by divorce.

Legal and Financial Effects

Legally speaking, usually the negative aspect is all that meets the eye. Divorce itself is a complicated legal procedure and involves time, money and a host of other hassles. Rules that have been simplified so far become massively complicated as the law first recognises that the two of you were a unit, then accepts that you don’t want to remain so anymore and finally makes you independent legal units again. If you are divorcing on any other ground apart from an amicable one, you will have to provide the court with proofs of it and face embarrassing questions on your private life in public.

Financially too, the same complications will happen. Your loan eligibility, pension benefit advantages and other cost-sharing benefits will all decrease to half of what it was. There would be a great deal of paperwork involved as you separate all accounts and investments.

On the other hand, are you not going for a divorce precisely because you want separate lives? This is your chance to burn the boat and move on. If you have a partner who is a sycophant, then you are rescuing yourself through this. Finalising your legal and financial separation is the first step towards a new and better life.

Property and Assets

As noted above, the division of property and assets comes as a mixed benefit. Consider making a new will if you are going for a divorce since you may otherwise end up giving your money away to the wrong people without even knowing it. It is a fact that financially you would be disadvantaged because of divorce. But you can utilise your freedom now to take major decisions as well. Similarly, if you lose or are constrained to sell property, it may be hard, but do you want to hold on to a house where you had seen so much misery?

The Question of Children

Children in general are badly affected by divorce. Their studies suffer, they may develop physical and emotional problems and the heart-break is unavoidable as they see their world torn apart by the very people who were supposed to be their guardians.

If you have won custody, this is your chance to bring them up as you had always wanted to. If you have not won custody, this is your chance to fulfil all your duties towards them and show them that you care. Ultimately, it is entirely up to you to turn the storm into a shelter of peace and love for your children.

Effects on Work

Work is affected badly by divorce again. People miss career opportunities, have to forego several days at office, or may even end up losing a job. Many women who have been home-makers have to try and find a job for themselves, and fare very badly on the economic front.

On the other hand, there are the divorce success stories too. Men have risen to new heights and women have become successful entrepreneurs only after getting rid of a partner who was tying them down.

Emotional and Physical

Yes, divorce is emotionally devastating. There is no point in shying away from the fact. People become emotionally and physically unbalanced too, either going on serial dating or coming to hate intimacy. Once again, you have the power to turn it all into a learning experience and rise from the ashes.
