How Important Are Manners on a Date?

A date is a time where two people who are attracted to each other make an effort to spend some time together away from their usual social circle. Although this is a time when you are usually trying to be on your best behavior, the date should be an opportunity for you to find out if the person you are with is someone you want to continue dating and getting to know better.

Today, manners are less of a big deal than they were a generation ago, but they are something that can help influence the opinion of someone who isn't quite sure whether or not they want to know more about their date. Even if a guy is attractive, perhaps his table manners are such that you just know you'd never be able to take him home to a family supper, never mind a meal in a fancy restaurant!

Old school manners involve certain actions that are now frowned upon by the liberated female society who feel they are quite capable of opening store doors, closing car doors and even pulling out their own chairs at a restaurant. However, there are some guys who were brought up to do such things, not because they were taught that women were inferior, but rather that they were taught that women were special and should be respected.

Despite the fact that there are some women who will take offense at this kind of treatment, most women - whether they enjoy the additional attention or not - will agree that the manners the guy shows towards women works in his favor rather than against it! It also helps if your guy has good manners when introducing them to your parents for the first time as this will give a good first impression - and if your guy shows good manners on a date, you can relax knowing that he's not going to embarrass you on that first 'meet the parents' experience!

When on a date, manners are more important because this is where you are trying to create a good impression. If your date's manners in this kind of situation are questionable, you can assume that when they are in their natural environment, their manners will be worse!

On your date, watch how your partner interacts with the other people there (including the staff), how they eat, how they act with you, are they loud, are they polite, are they full of their own importance and command all conversation or do they share the time fully with you? All of these things are a good indication of the kind of manners your date has - and on a date these are important because they are a good indicator of who your date really is rather than just the pretty side they want to impress you with!
