This made them the ideal gifts to those planning the wedding and those that were at the wedding. When the value and the price as a whole of sugar dropped they were soon replaced with almonds. These were a symbol of the union and were usually given in sets of five within a box and some sort of expensive material or ribbon to bind the box shut. Eventually, the almonds were covered in candy or sugar. This symbolized the union of the marriage with the bitterness of the almond and the sweetness of the candy.

Wedding planning favors have become a strong tradition that has become as diverse as the weddings themselves. Many of the more modern wedding planning favors have become a form of giving thanks instead of a show of wealth. This has made them something that is more expected by those that toil and struggle to get the wedding planned on time.
