The UK Dating Scene: Single Lives

The UK dating scene isn't that much different to that of the US. It is full of people who are either looking for a serious relationship, or are just out for a good time with other people who aren't in a committed relationship. In the past, being single in the UK meant that if you wanted to meet someone socially, the local dating scene was restricted to the local pub, or a special trip to a nightclub in the nearest city depending if you had the transportation.

Today, the Internet has had an impact on the UK singles dating scene and people are now able to meet up with potential dates from all over the country.
What is different to the US is the size of the country. Whereas someone on one side of the US would need to plan and organize to meet up with someone on the other side of the country, this isn't the case for the UK. For most people, it wouldn't matter where they lived, it would be possible to meet up over the weekend, and that's what happens. Someone who has been chatting online in a dating site in England, finds themselves spending Saturday night out on the town in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh.

Nightclubs are still the place for younger people to hook up however. The lights, loud music and atmosphere make them a magnet for anyone wanting to be seen (if not heard!). This is where you'll find many of those who are out for a good time rather than a partner -- but if a little romance happens to spark amidst the sea of people on the dance floor, then no-one's objecting!

Something that is increasingly popular in the UK is for groups of usually same sex people to plan a trip to a nightclub in a different part of the country. This normally means that they aren't just out for the night, but rather they're away for the weekend, booking in at a bed-and-breakfast, or hotel for the evening. This has been a popular activity for hen and stag parties held a week or so prior to the wedding, but these days single people are now being drawn to the excitement of doing something a little different than socializing the night away at their local pub, or usual clubbing venue.

Some clubs and pubs try to attract the singles crowd by offering special singles nights where alcoholic drinks are reduced for those who aren't attached. Others lure in singles by offering special events such as speed dating as a way to increase their turnover from this group of the population.

If you didn't drink alcohol and weren't keen on stepping foot inside a pub, traditionally a man's domain in the UK, then a single woman's chances of finding a partner were severely reduced. Today however, there are so many alternatives to hanging out at the pub that singles have a much better chance of finding someone to date.
