The Seven Hills of Rome

Situated in the Lazio region, the beautiful Italian city of Rome is where you can find such famous attractions as the Spanish Steps, The Pantheon, The Coliseum and The Trevi Fountain. However, Rome's sights don't end there, and the city is also famed for its seven hills which have played a prominent part in numerous aspects of Roman life throughout history.

Aventine Hill has the unenviable tag of being home to Rome’s highest property prices and derives its name from the birds (aves) nesting there as they rise from the River Tiber. This hill is actually two in one and the name combines the north western and south eastern hills.

Caelian Hill is punctuated by lovely old churches, the most well known of these are San Clemente, Santi Giovanni e Paolo and Santa Stefano Rotondo.

The top of Capitoline Hill is accessed by steps known as the Cordonata and these were designed by none other than Michelangelo. This hill is also where Rome’s City Hall can be found as well at the Capitoline Museums. The views from the top make it well worth the trip and there are a number of Michelangelo’s other stunning works to admire.

The largest of Rome’s seven hills, Esquiline Hill has a plethora of fine restaurants representing different world cuisines such as Indian, Korean and Chinese. There are also a number of markets, churches and cathedrals to explore.

Palatine Hill is the place where the City of Rome was originally formed and it later became a haunt of the rich who stayed in palatial surroundings. The ruins of many of these homes still remain today and give an insight into ancient Roman life.

The official residence of the Italian Head of State can be found on Quirinal Hill. It has a very distinguished history and was once home to the King of Italy and also the official residence of The Pope. The views over the Eternal City from here are truly breathtaking and will provide a lasting memory of this very special place.

Viminal Hill is the smallest of the Seven Hills of Rome and was the last to be officially included as part of the city. The palace of Viminal Hill is the where the Italian Interior Ministry is housed.

Each of these hills has something different to offer not least in terms of the views that they offer and a great way to tour them all is to hire a scooter and make those ascents a little easier. It can be difficult to remember the names of all seven hills but there is a mnemonic saying that may help you remember. It goes in clockwise order and takes the initial letter from each hill name; Queen Victoria Eyes Caesar’s Awfully Painful Corns.

Rome is Italy’s Capital City and as such flights to Rome run frequently from all over the world into its two main airports, Fiumicino and Ciampino. It’s an ideal location for a romantic break or a sightseeing trip back in time.
