Where to Ride Your ATV in Idaho

There's more than great potatoes in Idaho; this state is also known far and wide as a superb place to ride your ATV. Idaho has millions of acres that are dedicated to ATVs and with that in mind, it is easy to see why so many ATV enthusiasts make this state a riding destination so often.

Some of the best ATV trails to be found are located in the Sawtooth National Park. This park is home to an extremely vast array of wild forestland and the trails are rated from easy to moderately challenging in this area. These are fantastic trails for families with younger ATV riders or inexperienced riders to come tour the trail systems here. Although, the trails are narrow and winding, there are very few obstacles, except the occasional mudhole and almost no hills to climb. This is just a scenic and fun ride for all.

If you have a new pair of sand tires you've been dying to break in, make a journey over to St. Anthony Sand Dunes and hit the thick sand. Remember, if you have sand tires on your ATV, then only ride on sand. The large scoops on the sand tires are fantastic for gaining traction up and over the sand dunes but downright dangerous if used on a hard packed trail.

And if you are an experienced rider and you are more inclined to be attracted to a ride that is a tough and rugged challenging mountain experience, then the Hell's Canyon Recreation area is probably more up your alley. If you are riding your ATV in the early morning hours in this area, be on the look out for local wildlife residents such as black bear, elk , bighorn sheep, and winter surveys have found evidence that one of Idaho's rarest species of wildlife is alive and well in this area : the wolverine. Wolves are also frequently sited in this area as they use the Hells Canyon area as a travel corridor between the flat lands of central Idaho and the Blue Mountains of Oregon. If you're going to be riding in this area, pepper spray would be a good idea to pack along in case you need it. In almost all cases, the wildlife will simply watch you from a distance but animals that are ill, injured or have rabies can lose their fear of humans.

From rocky canyons and easy to ride mountain trails to muddy forests and sandy dunes, Idaho is a vast and diverse land that has something that will please just about every ATV enthusiast. There is literally a ride for everyone in Idaho.
